Here's What You'll Do

As a Geotechnical Engineer for Civil & Environmental Consultants, Inc. (CEC), you'll be involved in work related to coal combustion residual (CCR) and solid waste disposal facilities including construction oversight on behalf of the Owner. Duties include coordination with contractors and owners, maintaining project records and documentation, and coordination of construction quality assurance activities. This position will initially be based at Illinois power plants and waste facilities providing oversight on CCR impoundment closure and landfill construction projects.

Applicant will also have project responsibilities working with project teams in design, analyses, permitting and preparation of drawings and technical specifications for CCR landfill and impoundments, as well as solid and industrial waste disposal facilities. The responsibilities will include oversight of subsurface investigations, field logging of soil samples, performing engineering calculations/design, preparation of proposals and reports, and project and client support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret construction documents including, but not limited to, drawings, specifications, standards, codes and shop drawings;
  • Under supervision of certifying engineer, perform field inspections, observations of construction activities to ensure compliance with project plans, permits, approved shop/working drawings, project documents and specifications in accordance with established procedures;
  • Prepare and submit accurate, legible, comprehensive and complete inspection reports and/or testing records daily in accordance with established quality procedures
  • Perform analysis of data to verify accuracy before communication and submittal to supervision
  • Document, track and communicate construction non-conformance
  • Under general supervision and direction, interact with clients and other site personnel and provide input on appropriate resolution of issues and findings

Here's What You'll Need

  • 0 to 5 years' experience with construction materials testing and inspection for landfill and/or surface impoundments;
  • Working knowledge of construction plans and specifications;
  • Experience with CCR landfills, CCR ash impoundment, and solid waste landfill construction;
  • B.S. in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering
  • Engineering Intern certification or Professional Engineer license is preferred;
  • Sound understanding of business principles of consulting projects and related project delivery tools;
  • Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, with the ability to learn commercial software applications;
  • Overnight, out-of-town travel and the ability to work outside normal business hours;
  • Ability to work at remote site(s) and outdoors in varying weather conditions;
  • Ability to work independently
