Botanist/ Ecological Project Manager

Here’s What You’ll Do:

As a Botanist and Project Manager in CEC’s Ecological Practice, you will supervise ecologists and lead projects involving botanical surveys and habitat assessments for state and federally listed plant species, vegetation monitoring, invasive plant surveys and management plans, wetland delineations, ecological permitting, and report writing. You will serve as the primary client and regulatory agency point of contact, manage project budgets, develop and direct the technical scope of each project, and manage CEC staff and sub-consultants. You will be responsible for the quality and accuracy of ecological scopes of work and coordinating with other CEC Practice Areas.

Here’s What You’ll Need

  • B.S. or M.S. in a natural sciences field (e.g., Biology, Ecology, Environmental Sciences, Horticulture), preferably with a botanical focus
  • At least 5 to 7 years of professional botanical consulting experience, including:
      • A working knowledge of plants native to Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio
      • Experience conducting botanical field surveys and habitat assessments for state and federally listed plant species
      • Quantitative vegetation sampling methods for ecological restoration and monitoring projects
      • Experience writing high-quality reports
  • Project management experience, including leading project teams and mentoring co-workers
  • Experience delineating wetlands and waters according to established federal and state protocols

Here’s What We’d Like to See

  • Exceptional communication skills
  • Experience interacting with clients and developing business opportunities
  • USFWS-qualified surveyor in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and other states
  • Working knowledge of plants native to the broader northeast/mid-Atlantic region, including Maryland and New York
  • Experience with assessing vascular plant communities using the Floristic Quality Assessment Index, Ohio Vegetative Index of Biotic Integrity, and similar protocols
  • Experience conducting invasive plant surveys and preparing invasive plant management plans
  • Experience preparing Clean Water Section 401/404 permit applications
